Nutrition, Dance and Self Esteem. A conversation with Mari Carmen Grisolía

Note: this conversation is in Spanish, but YouTube subtitles are there for English speakers to catch up! I promise to bring more interviews in English in the future.

Loosing weight, dieting, getting rid of those extra pounds, achieving the beach body… does it ring a bell? One of my most visited articles is: Bellydance for Weight Loss: Myth or Reality?

I can tell you this is not a coincidence…

Diet culture harms and is part of a bigger problem: fat-phobia.

There is still too many people who can’t clearly see the fat phobia problem. People who claim to be looking after our health -the health of the fat ones, I mean – and send us to loose some weight as a first step before any other treatment. There’s plenty of fat phobia everywhere and it is horrible.

In general, the reality of fat people is quite harsh in many aspects, and our mental health is seriously affected by this.

I won’t deny the scientific evidence correlating overweight with metabolic problems, heart issues, diabetes, etc. But you should also know that there is NOT scientific evidence backing dieting as an effective method for loosing weight long term.

We are doing something wrong… We need to change a thing or two.

Without getting deep in details, I would like to point out that the concept of Health includes much more than the number on the scale, and that Mental Health is also Health.

Last year, my friend Mari Carmen Grisolía, nutritionist, PhD in physics and chemistry, and nutritional coach, put together a beautiful initiative for mums. I was invited to participate in it, and we had a beautiful chat about the relationships in between dance, self-esteem and weight loss.

It took me a while to publish our conversation in this blog. You know, good things take longer to be born. Now there are no excuses, you can listen to us now here:

If you would like to know more about Mari Carmen and her amazing work, you can visit her website minuevadieta.com

Thank you for being here today.

With love and body acceptance,

Zahida
