How to do the maya (vertical figure eight) – Dance like Shakira!

A few years ago, Shakira made from this movement a trend. Nowadays many people think about it when thinking about bellydance. The truth is that she does it in a very specific way, of course adapting the movement to big stages and the kind of music she makes.

The maya, or vertical figure eight, is a hip movement in which we draw an infinite symbol with our hips, in a vertical plane. This means, in the same plane we have the walls of our rooms.

The Maya movement is fairly easy to understand, but as usual, to make it work in your own body is a different story. 😉

Watch now the Maya’s video tutorial.

If you enjoyed this video, I’m sure you’ll be also interested in this one: How to Perfect your Hip Technique (for belly dancers). In it I share all the fundamentals that every belly dancer should know for a clean hip movement.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Dancing hugs,

Zahida.

Ps. I just would like to clarify that I’m very grateful to Shakira. I’ve mentioned her before over here, and I’ll probably mention her again soon. Thanks to Shakira’s work, belly dance became mainstream and a lot of nowadays amazing dancers started out just because they wanted to be like her.

So, dear Shakira, thank you very much for that good job you have been doing over the years.
